I knew kids in college who would get out a 20 to go to the bar and were budgeting based on the overdraft fees.

This is common. I had parents help me and I didn't have to work in college, but they definitely kept me on a short leash to teach me how to budget.

However, my dad gave me an incredible gift in college. Overdrafts, instead of charging me for overdrafting, would pull money from his account up to a certain amount (like $100 tops or something). It probably saved me thousands in penalties.

how the frick could you barely live on 65k/year combined without children? living above your means?

65k was before taxes. then you tack on my car note, my wifes lease she got before we were married or even dating, rent for our apt in BR, cell phone bill, health insurance, car insurance, food, gas, etc, there wasn't much left. We never missed a meal or anything, but to us, that was the poorest we have ever been. "poor" is relative. Never said we didn't make ends meet or have what we needed, but there wasn't really any money to blow.

Poor may be relative, but a lot of people would kill for your definition of poor. You can live a good life in most southern cities on 65k a year combined.

They used to sell Totino's pizzas in our student store and you could put it on your bursar. My parents unknowingly bought me hundreds of those things with their tuition payments

To this day, I really can't bring myself to eat those things. I would have them for 20 meals in a row at times, including breakfast.

i agree you weren't poor. you just lived above your means.

i supported a family of 3 on a 32k (before taxes) salary for 3 years. we just didn't have nice things.

I could see this. I rescind my downvote.

Woke many times the past couple years in college after a night at Freds with a text alert from chase saying I had a negative balance... Usually what got me is rent or insurance would get charged overnight along with the bar tab.

I could always ask my parents for money but they do enough for me already so I feel bad... and being poor and having to really budget is good for you every once in awhile.

Between finishing grad school and starting to work. I had about $200 in the bank and around $800 in credit card debt from paying for my last couple of classes.

Right now.

I'm working, the wife has her job lined up but doesn't start for a few weeks, I pay all of the bills and student loans.

In a few months we will be great. In two years, we will be debt free.

But right now, I have under 150 bucks to my name.

I have quite the land investments, but from a liquid asset standpoint, I'm more poor than I have ever been.

We are happy though. Tough at times, but we are grinding it out.

The OP asked "what is the poorest "YOU" have ever been?" i gave the time i was the poorest. i never said i was "poor." Big difference. That was just the "poorest" i have ever been.

In college, I used to feed myself by going to the Subway across the street from my dorm and buying 12" loaves of bread for $0.50 because that's all I could afford.

Now I own 31 Subway restaurants.

I once, while in college, was overjoyed to have bought a five pound sack of potatoes..... and ate off it for a week.

Take home pay on 65k is probably closer to 35-40k

Probably in China. Was living paycheck to paycheck and if I ever wanted to fly anywhere, had to bum money from my parents. Only making 16K a year over there, but was still able to live comfortably compared to most of the Chinese.
