The guy in the referee's uniform who ran stride-for-stride with Cannon was actually a high school referee from Mississippi who just put on his uniform and walked through the gate with the rest of the officials. The others had no idea who he was, so he had to explain what he was doing. They didn't give him away, and he watched the game from the sidelines...until the excitement of the moment caught up with him and he ran with Cannon down the sideline.

There was a really good story about it in the Jackson Clarion Ledger about it some years ago, but I'm not sure if it's still available online.
