The most popular item at the Bywater restaurant Red's Chinese is a chicken dish called General Lee's Chicken. At least that is what it was called from the day the restaurant opened in December until Monday (June 30), when the dish was renamed simply General's Chicken.

quote:

The change was prompted by a Facebook message from Lolis Eric Elie, the New Orleans-born writer and former Times-Picayune Metro columnist. Elie's message read: "Dear Red's, Why is there a General Lee's Chicken on your menu? Are you honoring the general who led the Confederacy, or have I jumped to the wrong conclusion?"

if REL had truly loved his kin and country he would have joined the North, ended the war in about 3 months, and saved countless lives.

instead he was nothing more than a dirty traitor.

It's a really disappointing article even by times pic standards. Calls out restaurants around the city with references in their names and menu items all the way to using the word Dixie. Calls out tivoli and lee for referencing the name of the road it's located on and its former name.

Do the editors not realize that small local businesses are thin margins and easily effect a lot of locals lives?

Simple out would have been that the dish was named after the great Harry lee who is Asian.

It isn't the same thing as General Li (named after Guang) chicken? Looks just like it, just with a bastardized name given to Chinese people when those tolerant Northerner's changed the spelling of their name on arrival.

Just don't change the recipe. One of the best menu items in NOLA.
