I agree with the first sentence. But unfortunately, the charter schools in New Orleans (like Hynes and Lusher) require proof of residency to apply.
It's probably best to figure that you're going to spend about $10k/child in private school per year, and then apply to the charters once you're in New Orleans.
It's hard to say how much one would have to make to live comfortably in New Orleans because "comfortably" is a subjective term. Everyone spends their money differently. But you can find a place to buy in a decent neighborhood (Broadmoor, Mid-City, Navarre, Gentilly by the new Holy Cross, etc) for around $300k. But you really can't get four bedrooms for that, except perhaps in Algiers Point. If you require four bedrooms, your best bet is probably New Metairie, or the Northshore.

Add about 100k to that.
