I've done the math and I'm pretty sure what you describe can be done for $75K, at a shoestring. But I do think for most people (like 99%) the tradeoffs you'd have to make to get by in NO on that salary would not be worth it.

Definitely. For it to be worth it I would want at least 125-150k if I was going for a 3 br 2 ba home in a good part of the city (and had 2 kids). The 4th bedroom and office space adds a ton of the price of real estate.
