Judging quality on television by whether or not a show in cancelled is a foolhardy effort.

Occasionally an good show will get cancelled after 1 or 2 seasons, but most cancellations are well earned. The ones that get cancelled too early develop cult followings that clamor for the show to come back or a movie. I can think of only a handful of shows following into that category, such as Firefly.

I did not know all of that other stuff about Wayans and Happy Endings. Sucks for him, but I think New Girl was far better off without the loud angry black man routine he brought to the pilot.

the show struggles at first because there is too much focus on her. when they branch out and start featuring the side characters is when the show gets great. Schmidt is awesome

Told my friends in groupme pretty much this exact same thing yesterday

Happy Endings was awesome, and really, New Girl has turned into what Happy Endings was.

I loved that show at first. Wore off. Felt too over the top for me towards the end

I watched the first 2 seasons. Was ok. I didn't care for Nick yelling all of his lines and Schmidt was a tad over the top.

It happens the other way too. According to Jim was on the air for 8 seasons and 182 episodes.

he comes back about 7 episodes into season 3 (out of 23) and is a full cast member for all of season 4.

Damn, so I won't be seeing him for a while...that sucks.

That other show apparently sucked

Happy Endings is fricking awesome.

I'm almost through season three (the final season), and have loved pretty much every episode.

The show peaks without him.

Winston is better than he is.

After reading this thread, do you really not know who Zoe Deschanel is? Or her shtick?

I really don't. After about 3 or 4 episodes last night, I assume her schtick is to be just a goofy, nerdy kind of chick. She's actually pretty funny on the show, but literally the way she speaks drives me insane. She sounds like a drunk slurring through her lines.

And Schmidt is an awesome character.

I've seen that referenced many times on here over the years, and through a few episodes, I don't see it yet. He's more annoying than anything. But I expect him to get better as the show goes on.

And to whomever said the show focuses on her in the beginning is correct...I mean, these are the opening credits for chrissakes:

I have a lot of personal resemblances to Nick Miller. None of them good though.

Are you attempting to start a series watch? Because if you've chosen to start New Girl ahead of Parks and Rec...there isn't a casty big enough.

Yes.

I will watch both though. The reason I started with New Girl last night was mainly because it's a lot shorter than P&R, so it'll be easier to storm through. Also, I've heard that P&R starts off pretty bad.

But P&R is definitely near the top of my watch list as well, so don't worry.

And I still have to finish Happy Endings as well. With comedies, I can mix and match them up without losing anything (I try to not do that when watching more "serious" shows).

See, I felt the same thing watching last night. And I feel like Schmidt is a bad mockup of Max (although like I said, I expect Schmidt to get a lot better).

I'm not saying you're wrong, because I haven't seen the show (and because that seems to be a popular opinion).

I just love DWJ. Dude cracks me up constantly. And I thought he was fine in the pilot. So far, Winston hasn't really done shite on the show yet, so I don't really have a take on him fitting in or not. We shall see.

IMO, he peaks shortly before they bring Coach back, and then drops off significatly for a while because they don't know what to do with both him and coach.

They should have brought in one of Tyler Perry's writers to figure out how to write more than one black character at a time.*

*I don't actually believe they should have done that.

there's also a lot of actors who show up as side characters in both shows. The shows are very similar in humor style

Same thing happened in real time

DWJ fans claimed how terrible Winston is and how great DWJ is (not deny this) but then eventually (around season 2) Winston starts to frickin shine. Wait until the hand bells episode

But then they give him a cat and bring Wayans back and ruin him fairly quickly
