If a pitcher is throwing a lot of off speed stuff, I'll put my hitting area in the bottom of the zone and leave it there. Then take anything that starts inside the hitting area. Unless it's a fastball of course. It's much easier to identify if you are looking off speed and reacting to fastball. The off speed stuff will drop out of the zone. The down side to this approach is you will have to take any high fast balls bc you are guaranteed to pop it up. If he throws two high fastballs for strikes in a row, leave the hitting zone in the middle and use contact swing to foul anything off until he makes a mistake.
I've used this with success whenever I get in a funk and I'm having trouble identifying pitches. Some guys are just hard to pick up for whatever reason.
