The longer i live in Baton Rouge the more I want out.

Baton Rouge was a shithole that is slowly becoming better and better
That being said, I now live in Houston and would never move back to BR. Only city that would be worth the move is Nola

I'll take BR crime over Houston crime any day.
Crime in BR is largely confined to one section of the city, not so in Houston. I'd move to Hooterville before I'd live in Houston. Just driving through that city is an exercise in terror.

I'd take Baton Rouge over Baghdad but that's about it

I worked in Houston for two years. I would Never uproot my family to live there. You are slave to your job with long commutes to work. Personally I wouldn't live in BR either. But that's just me

As I said earlier, I made the move back from Dallas when our kids were toddlers. Moved to be closer to friends/family, be able to see my kids more (my commute was 1 hr+ in Dallas), and to be close to NOLA and the Gulf Coast. Best decision we ever made. I LOVE Dallas and always will, but now I often go back to Dallas for a long weekend or so, and I'm ready to return to BR.
Like someone intimated, if you are from Louisiana, there is just no place else like it that feels like home. It definitely took a period of adjustment coming back, but now I wouldn't leave. The one drawback as far as kids is the private school tuition, but you could move to Zachary or Prairieville and have good schools.
To me, the pros far outweigh the cons of our move. I love people, customs and intangibles of Louisiana. People here generally think the way I think. I love the food, the fishing, the friendliness of the people, the trees, the tropical climate, the slower pace. I like being close to NOLA to go spend the day or weekend sometimes. I like the environment to raise my kids in--great youth sports, school community, neighborhood, etc. I like our church community(Catholic). I like being close to Orange Beach/Perdido Key, and also being able to salt water fish or fresh water fish whenever I want. I love going to LSU sports events at the drop of a hat.
BR is also thriving economically. You are in the capital and in the town of the flagship University--so there will always be economic activity here. Downtown (and the area between Downtown and LSU) are being revitalized. Out of all of the cities in LA, to me, this is the closest to a city "on the upswing." It does not have all the amenities of a Houston or a Dallas, but those trade offs are worth it to me to be in a decent-sized city with a small-town feel.
Negatives: Traffic, crime in North BR, Traffic, democrats, Private School Tuition, traffic. If you are going to live in the South, though, that's just part of the program.
I'd make the move again if I had to do it over.

Just go take a stroll downtown. The development is pretty remarkable over the last few years. There's actually a night life there now

People on here like to shite on BR a lot. It'll never be the cultural mecca that Auburn, AL is (sarcasm), but it's steadily getting better. Downtown continues its resurgence, LSU is about to break ground on the Water Campus District, which will completely change the face of the riverfront between campus and downtown. For a city its size, BR has some great public parks and green spaces, a nationally-recognized symphony and ballet company, and an expanding visual and performing arts scene. Hell, even the culinary opportunities have improved ten fold from just a few years ago.

Been open for a few years now. My mom and her friends walk it 3 days/week. Never had any problems.

Ah, so baton rouge will be worse in the future based on predictions
Crime continues its decrease in BR like the rest of the country
I would never live on br again, but it has greatly improved in the last 10 years. Pretty undeniable, sorry it is true.

I don't know what to tell you. I wouldn't want to live in Houston or Baton Rouge.

Well said. If you live in any major city in the American South, you have to deal with traffic, crime, and democrats. It is what it is, and Baton Rouge is no different.

The problem is that br doesn't have the big city amenities.
Also, the traffic is way worse than Nola or Houston IMO

Can't deny that it's horrible, but then again I sit on I-35 every evening for at least an hour trying to get home.

That can be true, but it also depends on what amenities you're referring to.

It's just the first leg of a planned city-wide network of walking trails that will connect nearly every BREC property from Santa Maria to the LSU Lakes to downtown to independence park to the Zoo. It's a pretty ambitious plan and the downtown greenway is just the very first part.

Must be something different. I just saw it on the news last week..... But I am glad certain areas of BR are improving... South BR is awesome except EVEYBODY goes there.........Anything north of Fla blvd is not somewhere to be at night.IMO.

These are two of the areas where I've noticed the most change. Mid City is changing rapidly.
LSU is working hard with the city to clean up the Nicholson Drive and Highland Road corridors that lead into campus.
The Government Street and Perkins Road/overpass areas will eventually be much more pedestrian-friendly.
