I want to take my son's fishing in the lake, thinking causeway or trestles in Slidell.
Please help me build a good, but not too expensive tackle box.
Any advice for fishing theses areas is also appreciated.
Best time of year

just go to Gus's in Slidell and they'll set you up with all the Matrix and Goldeneye you need.

Check all your safety gear if your taking your kids.

Start off building your tackle box with soft plastics and various jig heads. These are the cheapest baits to start with and can be used year around in just about every type of environment or conditions.
Everyone has their preferences for soft plastics. I really don't think that there is that much o me a difference between them. Lots of people like the Matrix shad. Which I like along with the deadly Dudley's. I think Matrix only has about 8-9 color options so just get a couple bags of each color.
1/4 and 3/8 ounce are your most common size jig heads for basic saltwater fishing but you will need bigger 1/2 and 3/4 ounce sizes at least for fishing Pontratrain.

don't get too close to other boats when fishing
when passing a stopped boat either drop to idle or keep it at full throttle. You think you are being nice by slowing down to half throttle but you are throwing a lot bigger wake
research the depth before going to an area you don't know. It's not fun to be stuck
have fun!
