Why do I keep hearing this? It makes me cringe when I hear that an SEC title doesn't matter. Why would a conference title not matter?

because it doesn't, you don't get a trophy, you don't get an auto bid into the tourney, you just get the best seed in the conference tourney.
The way LSU has played assuming we don't go 0-5 we should have a top 8 seed, and that is all that matters.
let me ask you this simple question
what would you rather have.
1) best conference record at end of season, win SEC tourney, don't win it all
2) don't have best conference record at end of season, don't win SEC tourney, but win it all.
having a top 8 seed is much more important than winning your conference.

Because people are dumb and have this logic:

It's the idea that the SEC Championship and NC are mutually exclusive. That winning the SEC gives you a LESS likely chance to win it all. When the opposite is true. Of LSU's 6 NC teams, 5 of them won the SEC regular season. The 6th won the SECT.
