What do you tell people/what do you hear was the most traumatic part of serving there?

eta:

I'm sure getting shot at was the biggest one, but there may be other answers out there that I don't know about. Hence the thread.

I don't ask vets about their service because they are probably tired of people asking and I don't care.

IEDs and boredom are what I hear most.

I was told by a guy the most traumatic part was seeing his friends face blown off 3 feet away.

ETA: What kind of question is this anyway?

Just don't ask. By the way, being shot at is not the worst part of combat by a long shot. That this made the list shows how far you are from it so don't ask, seriously don't ask.

Tbh, I don't have much desire, at all, to talk about stuff like that with people who can't relate.

My buddy was a medic in the first gulf war and said he injured both wrists from fapping too much.

The one vet I encounter on a regular basis says that getting shot at in NOLA after Katrina was more traumatic than anything he encountered in Afghanistan or Iraq. He never expected to be shot at by other Americans.

And he's a purple heart recipient whose HV was blown up by an IED.

I'm always happy to share what my job was when I was in the box... But never go into details about what happened.

I know that a lot of vets don't like sharing details with people who didn't go.

Anyone who does is probably full of shite about 90%+ of what they're saying.

Oh, and don't ever ask a vet, "Did you ever kill anyone?" It's a terrible question that I suspect you really don't WANT the answer to and it's hard to talk about shite like that.

I always said that if you ever take someone's life for whatever reason, that shite goes to the grave... No exceptions.

Second guessing my decisions/actions at the time which might have led to a different outcome when someone got hurt.

most Traumatic someone else said it "The Hero Ceremony" for your fallen brothers.

My experience was far different in the First Gulf War than what the guys who fought in the Second Gulf War and Afghanistan went through. The actual combat phase was a blur and we barely even stopped from the time the shooting started until they called a halt to offensive operations.

As far as traumatic part, there was the weeks of anticipation of what lay ahead before we crossed the berm. We were expecting to be hit with a ton of chemicals and that's what worried me the most. Once the ground war started, my biggest scare came when we first started getting incoming fire and hearing and feeling a round bounce off the turret. Big jolts or bangs still get me sometimes even today.

I see a counselor once a month at the VA. I was back home and out the military for 5 years, before I got help. I was a raging alcoholic with a short fuse, and my wife told me if I didn't get help she was going to leave me.

Seeing and hearing someone being burned alive is something that stays with u forever. For me I think the worse part was just the anxiety or anticipation right before some shite pooped off. Once the shite hit the fan my training kicked in for the most part.

Nothing I saw was even that traumatic in my mind. Seeing people torn up didn't affect me since it's my job to fix them and it was never anyone in my platoon, fortunately. I didn't care about getting shot at or blown up since I went in expecting it. I had a jingle truck VBIED go off about 100 meters away that scared the shite out of me. Other than that most of my deployment was pretty boring and uneventful.
