Do you let the washer fill with water completely before putting detergent in? Pouring detergent directly onto clothes can cause some stains.

yeah I used to throw the clothes in, start the water, then pour directly on top. After I then began to pour detergent, start the water, then add clothes and it seemed to work.

No, I just put my clothes in the washer, pour some detergent on it, set the dials and go.
I guess that could be it, but it seems like if so it'd be happening a lot more frequently, and on a lot more garments.
