Try lowering your video settings. My laptop isn't that new so I had to go to fast graphics and lower the chunk render distance.
Hopefully I'll do even better now that I've upgraded Ubuntu and got a new Java install. Just have to get the technic launcher working. . .

it's something to do with Java.
Even in single player with the mods it crashes.
One time I got a message saying Java memory is low. But I have 1gb allocated. There is a yellow exclamation point next to the memory settings on the java options, but no explanation what that exclamation point is.
