Here's another question:
If we draft him in the 4th or 5th, is the team bound by any league rule on what the contract amount has to be? Can we structure the contract to pay him 1st round money if he makes the team? (I'm assuming this situation should have some clarity before the 53 man roster has to be in).

Why would we want to?

I'm not sure what the rookie wage scale has to say about it though.

1) no way he sits out. He'd be even less likely to get drafted high next year. Would benefit much more getting a year of his short rookie deal out of the way and getting 2nd contract.

2) what kind of precedent would paying a late rounder set for future negotiations (pretending there isn't a rookie wage scale making this moot).

3) if you're a guy legitimately drafted in the early rounds and some late rounder is getting a first round contact how in the hell would you respond?
