He's always made... not exactly stupid, but selfish decisions. And he absolutely has tried to work on his lonesome, and has chafed against the concept of the team. In fact, even early dialogue in this film shows he resents Cap's leadership position when Stark has all of the money and tech.

He's been looking for a way out of the superhero racket. Which is why War Machine exists.

Maybe, but there in lies the problem I have with his character at this point. It's not who he started out to be. And War Machine is controlled by his friend, not a strange, unknown AI program. Oh.........and he's making stupid arse decisions like building a super robot that could kill them all.
