No one knows how this hire will work out, but if the guy is good enough to be hired by NS twice...he's probably not a "mediocre" coach.

Demoted by NS after one year at the DC position. He was then fired by Clemson as DC after two years. Then rehired by bama the university in an administrative capacity, not by Saban. He then backed his way into the inside linebackers job the following year then Les hires him as our DC.

Depends on what you asked him to do. Derek Dooley was hired by Saban twice, he was demonstrably mediocre as a head coach. Saban recommended Houston Nutt to replace him at LSU. He's the definition of mediocre. Just because Saban is friends with someone doesn't mean they can do everything in the world. He hired Muschamp twice, how was he at Florida? He hired Pat Shurmur once upon a time. Dude barely made it a year when he got a promotion. LSU didn't hire Steele to be the linebackers coach. He's coordinating the defense. Not what Saban ever hired him to do. Whether or not he can get the job done is up to him. We know that he wasn't great as a head coach and struggled at Clemson. We shall see.
