Are you wanting something in that size range, or would bigger be acceptable too?

If you're a Windows guy already, take a close look at the Dell XPS 13. Several models to choose from, though I'd opt for the $999 version for the 8GB of RAM, but otherwise just get the $799 version with the i3 and 4GB of RAM. They are direct competition and look very similar to the Air. Basically the same size and weight but notably longer battery life than the Air (which previously held the crown for battery life). 15 hrs. supposedly. Higher res screen, too.



The other ad nauseam suggestion you'll get in this thread is the Surface Pro 3.

I have an XPS 11 from work. I really like it, but the screen is not all that great.

This one I buy would mainly be for wife to websurf, look at houzz, etc.

Of course, and you realize there are good reasons for that.

But your suggestion is an excellent one too. I suspect that for many a big difference will be personal preference regarding the keyboard. The resolution and connectivity options are IMHO generally comparable across models.
