A good one, but Gutenberg changed the game. Only priests and few nobles could read at the time. The printing press changed it all. There would have been no Reformation without him.

If he hadn't invented the printing press, assuming he really was first, someone else would have figured it out within a year

The Chinese invented printing, so if you're going with that angle, it's whatever Chinese guy invented it.

If you're going with Christianity or Islam, they owe their existence to Akhenaten, the Egyptian inventor of monotheism.

Da Vinci's personal hero was Archimedes. He invented the lever, the auger and calculus. His technology allowed humans to advance civilization more than anyone who had come before him.

Or Jack Tripper. Dude had three hot roommates. Aww yee.
