Wife's car

Need help diagnosing a problem. Check engine light came on so I checked oil level on dip stick. It was low so I added a quart and cranked up and run it a bit. Stopped and checked dip stick still was low on oil. I added another quart and started it up and a ton of white smoke came out of exhaust. Shut it down and tried to drain some oil off but too damn hot to put plug back in. Needless to say I drained the whole thing. Went bought more oil and put 4 quarts in as per manual. Less smoke and check engine light is off. But oil is not registering on dip stick. My question is could the oil pump be gone or maybe sludges up? Sorry for long post.

if the oil fill is in the valve cover, just get a flashlight and look into the fill hole to see if you can see any sludge...
honestly, the white smoke makes me think head gasket is bad, but I am kind of confused about where the oil is going...

Was the light yellow or red? The yellow "check engine light " does not test oil level.

very good point...he should probably go somewhere like autozone to see if he can snag a code out of it...

Top it off again. If there continues to be white smoke when it is running and loss of oil, I'd think head gasket first
You can buy little test strips at any auto parts store that'll tell you if you have any oil in the coolant

Check engine light usually means emissions stuff. Most likely culprit is bad gas cap.
The owners manual usually says put another tank in and see if it goes away.

Light was yellow. But what puzzles me there was no oil registering on dip stick after I put oil in.

Will go to auto zone it's around the corner from me.

If the car is very old, the oil return holes in the head could be clogged. The oil pump is sending oil up, but it doesn't drain back to the pan.
I had this happen on an old truck. I had to take the valve covers off, and clear the return holes with s long screwdriver.

check oil level when the vehicle has been sitting for a few hours. Make sure it is on level ground. This will tell you if the oil level is correct.

Make sure you're pulling the right dipstick. You could be checking the transmission fluid instead if oil. It happens.

If the oil keeps disappearing and its blowing white smoke you should really check the coolant. Headgaskets may be shot and letting the oil mix with the coolant. If the coolant looks like chocolate milk, I'd say the engine is toast.

everything Jb just said,
also check all the heater/radiator hoses and ask her if she saw any raise in the temp, may have blown a hose, overheated causing the head gasket to go

Check engine light came on the you should probably get a code reader or take it somewhere to pull the code. Throwing oil at it and relying on half-baked diagnosis from an internet forum isn't going to get you very far.

Took car to shop and they ran diagnostic and was throwing code p0016. It is the oil fill baffle that is broke. Not touching any lifters or anything. Shop said that it needed replacing and would cost $616.00 to replace as it is made into the valve cover. Said if no tapping is heard am good to go for a while till I can save up enough money to get it done. But that is what was causing code light to come on. It's off for now and oil level is good. Thanks everyone for the help.

man, you have got to be able to find someone to change a valve cover for less than $600....
fwiw, I am not sure why an oil fill baffle being broke would cause white smoke or no oil to show up on the dipstick...might be true, but I am a little suspicious...

The white smoke was due to being over-filled. And now the mechanic showed me that there was oil on the dipstick. It was that the oil was clean every time I checked it. No smoking now. Yeah it's the valve cover is 75% of the cost. Gonna try to find one somewhere else cheaper and maybe have someone else put it on for me. Just can't do it with my bad back.
