It's not necessarily about fashion, but it's about looking good and presenting the best possible you. I don't think cargo shorts do that--they make you look like a teenager and not a grown man.
That said, I don't care what other people are wearing. Young-ish, educated and perfectly secure, actually--just giving my thoughts on why I wouldn't buy them. Maybe you sound old and out of touch.

You said people look like slobs wearing them, you care. As you get older, become a man, raise a family, provide for them, and generally worry about important things in life, and not clothing, you will think differently. By the way, I don't wear cargo shorts, unless I'm at one of my jobs.
I'm not that old, early 40's.
