I wouldn't call a half marathon "extreme"

if she had just run a 100 mile ultra, yeah thats one thing, but a half?

millions upon millions run halfs every weekend

she must have had some type of unknown heart defect

Maybe not that many but add up all the distance races, tri races, bike races, and recreational runners and on any given weekend a lot of people are participating in endurance activities. Sadly, people do die during or just after these activities but at a rate less than the general population. Then add in the health benefits that this group has over the general population like less diabetes, lower cancer rate, less work days missed to illnesses, etc. and you get a different picture of things. Obviously there is a risk and there are documented health concerns associated with these activities but no worse than anything else you might pick to waste your time on.
