Actually it looks like a Diamondback water snake.. Though that dark stripe down the back is uncharacteristic. Was he dead for a while and laying on his back - that could cause that dark stripe to form while dead.

No, he was alive in that pic, but was particularly lethargic. Didn't even really react once my Dog chomped him. Just kinda writhed a little bit
