If that was his thought process the it wasn't ego, he was just plain wrong. You HAVE to bunt there. It's not up for debate.

Well, let's not go crazy. It is debatable. It just doesn't mean he is immune from criticism. The data suggests that a bunt there optimizes your chances to win. It isn't the only decision, but you can't brush off the criticism by saying "well you guys just don't know baseball." Knowing baseball means knowing what the optimal play is there and being held accountable when you choose a different strategy.
