Big '88--This was the set up...

The 'Burbs '89--This was the film that did it.

I've never been a big fan of Tom Hanks as a dramatic actor. His early comedic performances were terrific though. I really liked him in Splash, Big, A League of Their Own and Sleepless in Seattle. Than he made Philadelphia, won as Oscar for it, made Forrest Gump, won another Oscar and eventually became another dreary dramatic Hollywood actor. His career would have been a lot more interesting if he had went the Robin Williams route sticking mainly with comedy while taking on an interesting dramatic role every now and then.

Sleepless in Seattle, easily. He was on his way with Big, though. And then maybe Apollo 13 drove it home.

I remember when I first saw Tom Hanks in a movie and I thought, this guy is good, I wish him luck. And then, I saw him in BIG and I thought he’s got comedy chops, that’s fantastic and that’s a rare quality. Then in Apollo 13, I saw the brilliance of his dramatic acting. And I said to myself ‘mother fricker’.

Big was what made him a "Must watch" actor for awhile. It was amazing in the theater. It has an 80's feel that may date it some, but he nailed how a little kid would think & act in the situation. I'll still watch it just about any time I catch it on TV. The big keyboard scene is greatness!
ETA: To me the freaking mom in Big, Mercedes Ruehl, is an unlikable person. She is in just about everything she's in.

For me he's never had a five or six movies in a row streak of greatness, but he's made 14 or 15 really good movies since & including Big.

His performance in Captain Philips really reminded me how good of a dramatic actor he is.

Splash and Bachelor Party made him a bankable comedy star, then I'd say Big propelled him to the next level. Sleepless in Seattle was a huge hit, then Philadelphia made him the Tom Hanks most think of today.

Tom Hanks is like Robin Williams, he's been famous for what feels like my whole life. I remember his Family Ties role too. To this day, I remember him being great in both comedy and drama in that small role.

Splash put him on the radar.
Big made him a major comic actor.
Philadelphia made him a movie star.

The box office wins that followed his Philadelphia Oscar just cemented the legend.

I think Philadelphia added a level of range and depth to Hanks' resume, but that League was the first role that he showed the character that dominated what was to become the common thread of his persona.
