Reefer Madness.

And can we get past the "rules is rules" discussion? There has always been dumb rules in life and plenty go up for debate every year, it's not very productive to just yell out "ITS A RULE END OF STORY" anytime anyone questions it.

If I am a GM, owner, coach etc. I am definitely taking a chance on him. For the dinosaur front offices that are viewing pot from a caveman's perspective that will be their loss. Any progressive thinking front office would understand the leash on marijuana infractions is loosening every day. Even the NFL understands this and is slowly going to a more acceptable marijuana policy, and those doors will only open wider each year.
I think the point is flying over your head. Allow me to supply a ladder so you can get it.
He knew he was going to the combine and would be drug tested. He knew the lettuce was one of the substances they were testing. He chose to burn knowing these things, and then he got burnt. This isn't some legalize it platform at work here; this is a person that a team is about to invest millions in, and now teams see that he is too damn irresponsible and dumb to not follow the rules. This is strictly a trust issue. Not one coach is going to say, "well, I hate the grass, so you won't be on my squad." No. What they will say is, "how the hell can we trust this dude to be active 16 games without suspension when he is too damn irresponsible to not light up WHEN HE KNOWS HE IS GOING TO BE TESTED."
So take your Ron Paulian legalize it platform to the poli board, because it has nothing to do with the situation at hand here.

Dude. I fricking get that.
I'm saying the rule itself is dumb, get past the same damn response to any question towards the rule.

I'm not talking about the legality of pot
I'm talking about the NFLs out of whack punishment for Pot
I'm talking about the NFLs out of whack punishment for Pot

Why? Smoke weed and go to your job. Not high. Just get drug tested for it. You'd, more than likely, get fired. This isn't just the NFL. Its basically, everyone.

What would happen if I beat my wife and they found out? 2 weeks paid vacation...err suspension?
And if I got a DUI and they found out....I would just get a firm talking to right?
Since my job is the equivalent to the NFL and all

I don't know. Is it?
Look, you are barking up the wrong tree. You want policy changed, this isn't going to get it done. Fact is they have standards for punishment set in place. Everyone knows them. Some suck. Some are stupid. Some make sense. Dude took his chances with weed and will suffer some consequence. It may not matter in the long run, but for right now, it will. Suck it. Stop bitching about it and talk about whether the Saints should take a chance on him if he hits 13.

how is it out of whack? he isn't being punished. he is being put on the watch list due to a positive test. seems pretty tame to me. if he continues to show disrespect for the rules, then he will incur further punishment, each one more severe than the last. I guess you are of the mindset that rule breaking should suffer no consequences? Josh Gordon just got suspended for sippin a brewski. OUT OF WHACK!!!! IT'S ONLY ALCOHOL!!! Um, not when he had just failed so many previous tests that they told him to stop all mind altering substances in order to continue playing in the league.
I guess you are one of those really cool rebels that says frick authority, they don't tell me what to do. Well shite, bra, if you dislike society and a set of rules so much, I'm sure there's a nice tree in the Amazon that you can call your home. I promise you, the only rules you have to follow are the rules of the land. Good luck with that

One guy loses an entire year of his career and doesn't get to accumulate a year to free agency because he smoked weed
Another guy beats his wife and get a 2 game suspension
Another guy gets a year long paid (for 13 mil) suspension, gets to hit free agency, pays off his accuser, and gets another 13 million dollar contract for his troubles
THAT is out of whack
ETA and I haven't said a word about alcohol so I don't know where you're getting that

Nowhere in this thread have I said that the NFL should allow everyone to smoke pot freely (id be fine with that but it's not what I'm advocating specifically). I've consistently argued that the punishment is out of whack. That is it.

Well, to be fair, he did it multiple times. Fact.

At first...then he got the year. And was caught on camera. Fact.

I mean, we think he paid off his accuser. Not Fact.

Ray rice was only suspended for 6 games after the original 2

He settled with her out of court, that was reported

And that makes the act worse than the domestic violence? Because that's what the NFL implies with it's punishment system
There's a reason we don't put shoplifters on death row

You have your woman beaters confused. McDonald settled out of court. He did not get a 13Mil contact. Hardy did. His accuser "disappeared".
So, again, Not Fact.

Rice was suspended indefinitely after the release of the elevator footage. Then cut. He won an appeal. Get your facts straight.

No. That is what you are implying.

That's even worse, we all know what happened. She dropped the charges out of either money or fear. Is common sense not allowed?

At the end of the day he was only suspended 6 games. Either way you look at it is an embarrassing punishment. At worst even if you look at the full year suspension that Ray Rice did not serve, that is still an equal punishment to smoking weed
quote:
No. That is what you are implying.
Before last years drastic over correction, what was more harmful to your career, failing two drug tests or an arrest for DUI/domestic violence?
And by the way the domestic violence and DUIs would still be the same non issue had there not been people that looked passed the argument of "THE RULES ARE THE RULES" and said "hey this is fricking stupid" and the league was pressured into change that was necessary
