You might as well put one between your legs to stop the vag bleeding, brah.

I used to use it all of the time. The current place I'm at doesn't have one though. Yes it does make a little difference. No reason not to use it if available imo.

but it's definitely not necessary in any way

Actually sounds like a good idea

On the subject of squats, 3 sets of 10 occasionally makes me queasy. It's not my breathing or the weight. I'm guzzling water too. What's going on?

Used it in high school after I got sun poisoning at the beach.

Before my shoulder muscles were more developed, I had to use it as the bar would rest right on my bone.

Now I don't use it.

well it won't help you lift more, but I mean obviously there's some difference in a steel bar resting on your back compared to one with a foam pad on it.

I find that when its used people end up putting the bar to high. The steel gives instant feedback on where you need to place the bar

It alters the position of the bar and can mess with your form too. I used one in high school but haven't used one since. Put the bar low on you back and you'll lift more and it still shouldn't hurt

People make fun of people that use it but I find people who mane fun of people that do have insecurity issues

After suggestions from the board, I have been researching Starting Strength, the foam pad should never be used, if the bar is hurting your back. It's too high, the proper position should be lower. At least that's what I've read...lol

Eta: it does help not having the pad and making sure the bar is low enough,I'm a Rippetoe believer now

I like having a rough skin patch on my back. I remember when I used to not squat thinking it was just too uncomfortable. Now that I squat regularly I don't notice any discomfort at all.
