With the airflow, it's not going to be near that hot. Heat is not what would worry me. I do agree that an accident spell bad news for the dog.
It's not the best way to transport your dog, and I wouldn't do it. I'm just pointing out that I think throwing dogs in the beds of trucks is pretty dangerous as well, and that doesn't get that bad of a rep.
My dog rides inside the SUV. Only time she's ever been in the back of a truck is if she's going to the camp and is covered in mud or the cab is full. Then she is in a kennel that is strapped down and secure in the bed of the truck.
