Missing the second ft and putting the rebound back in doesn't seem all that difficult. Plus you risk the shooter antipitating the foul and chucking a 3.

I don't think it is as cut and dry as most make it out

It's not. You go from worst case scenario being overtime to losing if a 4 point play happens or a missed ft and putback.
