Why is fouling under 5 seconds up three not the go to move?

I'm not talking about just our game but you see it all the time teams don't foul. I don't understand it. You almost never lose doing this but giving up the three happens a lot.

It's basically been universally accepted as the thing to do. I'm sure it's happened before but I can't think of a time a team lost fouling up 3 correctly. (Very late.. Not much time left)

The Spurs lost earlier this season but they fouled with way too much time left.

Teams lose all the time when they let the other team get off the 3 and send it to overtime.

Missing the second ft and putting the rebound back in doesn't seem all that difficult. Plus you risk the shooter antipitating the foul and chucking a 3.

I don't think it is as cut and dry as most make it out

Honestly, after fouling at least twice behind the 3-point line In the last 10 minutes, giving Auburn 3 free throws, I wouldn't trust our guys to foul on the floor and not in the act of shooting. They are basketball dumb enough to have either given 3 free throw to tie instead of making a 3, or even giving up a 4 point play. Most teams, I think you definitely foul. I'm not sure our guys are smart enough(basketball-wise) to do it correctly, though.

Oh well, it's over with.

I think coaches fear a player will foul during the shot. Given the basketball IQ of this team, I can understand that fear.

But I'm fouling in that situation.

Oh it is the right move, just our coaches are pitiful and don't teach our players anything.

I thought we should have fouled but it's not a foolproof strategy. The foul could have left 15-20 seconds on the clock IIRC which means we would have had to make free throws of our own, which was not automatic unless Horns was shooting them.
