"New" Saints O being built around Brees' changing abilities

I don't think it's by accident all these moves being made are to address Brees' ability to throw the deep ball as opposed to when he was younger. However, given time, Brees will carve up a Defense probably better than anyone in the league. The new Saints will run to set up the short/medium pass.
Ingram (beast run behind Unger)
Spiller/Cooks (short field speed targets)
Josh Hill (a better pass catcher than he gets credit for)
Colston (he and Brees know each other like a book)
Graham was expendable because he doesn't fit this new offense, in that precision route running will be at a premium, and TE's will be expected to block and catch. Graham was incredible at what he did, but he wasn't a blocker, and when he started dropping passes and did some sloppy route running, the die was cast.
Stills was a deep threat, and we're just not going to go deep that much anymore with Brees' declining arm strength. And maybe if the rumors are true that Drew wasn't a fan of his. We got good value for him and if we do need a deep threat, Cooks can fill in, or we draft a rookie for that role.
There is no doubt that we extremely thin and unknown at receiver position. I think we may still pick up a FA, definitely in the draft - a great route runner, possession receiver. Not sure who is left.
The team is being built to maximize the last few years of Brees' stellar career. They are all in for that. And I'm OK with it. Had we gone with tweaks to last years team, we would get a similar result. The team needed a shakeup.
PS: and I do believe we draft Bryce Petty....

Brees is still great at the deep ball

Deep ball were on point when we played against teams with no interior pass rush.
I agree on some, like Graham doesn't fit the philosophy. He is just too one-dimensional and expensive for someone doing Colston's job.

Triplett tweeted that Payton was very high on Coleman, Toon, and Santavious Jones at the end of last year. Maybe he thinks we're set at wr.

Graham fits ANY offense. His size and spedd running up the seam is a matchup nightmare for any DB/Safety. the only real defense for it is to drill him once he touches the ball and make him drop it.
Unfortunately he was one of the few trades that would bring in a top Center which is what we desperately needed to;
1) hold his own in the middle, and
2) HELP the OGs next to him.
Jimmy had to go in any significant retooling due to his relative value and price-tag.

He had the 3rd most accurate deep ball in 2014. He had the highest passer rating by far on deep balls in 2013 with 15 TDs to just 2 Ints
He did this while facing the 4th most pressures in the NFL in 2014...

"New" Saints D being built around Brees' same old abilities
Thats how it should read.
The thought is the offense will always run at a high clip as long as Drew is behind center. The big question is will the D makes stops. These moves are all about D.
Spiller-replaces sproles/thomas
Grubbs- was a likely casualty, has been known all along.
Unger- Without a solid center Drew gets pressure up the middle and we have seen what happens with that

I'd rather Sean Mannion.

Wrong. Really seems like we're going the Broncos and Elway route..sort of. We're obviously making the transition to a more run heavy offense to give Brees more true PA ability. On top of that, we're also focusing heavily on defense to improve our perennially bad side of the ball.
