I jumped a pair of wood ducks out of our pond and it got me motivated to build them a nesting box. I know I'm probably late for this year, but I'll get it hung up and waiting on them next year.

Here are the plans I used...

Here's my rendition...

Finished product with a message from me and a flower sticker from my daughter. She had a blast building the "bird house".

And for your viewing pleasure...

Be careful where you mount it, those things are snake havens.

Is there a latch or hinge for you to clean it out in the offseason?

Needs to be close enough to the water for the chicks to jump into on Jump Day.

LDWF info on Wood Duck nest boxes and recommendations

It looks like they recommend mounting the boxes over water and not affixed to a tree to minimize racooon, rat snake and fire ant predation.

Good work CT.

Just finished mine up . I bought the precut cedar from a guy online. 3 boxes for 80 bucks or something close that.
We put ours on 1 1/2 in galvanized fence poles with the cone. Just make sure predators can't access the box from above.

that is pretty sweet, clyde...not too late at all to put them up....in fact, some hen woodie that is worrying over not having a nest den will thank you for it!...

Looks good. Definitely not too late. I have 6 boxes and they will use them well into the summer.

As others have said, add some fine mesh chicken wire to the inside for the chicks to climb out and a predator guard (cone). Snakes can definitely climb a 4x4 post.

You can get the bedding material in just about any pet food/accessory isle. Just look for pine or cedar wood shavings. Add a few inches of bedding to the bottom of the box or they won't use the nest.

Finally, if you can make the bottom swivel out it makes cleaning the box a lot easier.

Good luck! I think a wood duck box is much more helpful than donating a few bucks to DU.
