I messed around last year with using live crickets on top water. Just use light tackle and most of the time they will stay on top of the water and swim. Them perch can't stand it.

When we are fishing in the pond, I always take a cricket and throw it out on the water. If it gets hit within a few seconds, I get the fly rod. It if swims back to the bank, I try something else.
