It knocks me down a peg.

But damn dude, no matter how bad life can get, it's still life. It's the only one you got.
A Christian knows what happens to one's soul if you take your own life....
An atheist knows this is the only life we have...

It's never worth it to even go down that road. Think of the tears your family would shed.
If where you are isn't working then change your location. Change your career, change your surroundings, but don't ever try or think that ending your life will solve anything. All it will do is take you out of the game. When things are really bad and you are down, remember you can only feel that down because you have already felt the inverse of that, the opposing love and warmth of others.

You shouldn't have underlying issues.
Whatever it is. You need to put who you are out front.
Your family will accept you for who you are, but don't think that you can take your life and 'fix' things. All you will do is break other people's lives.

Right now make a list of goals and try to achieve them. Do that every single day.
Personal, financial, physical... etc.
Get your mind on the future.
Do not live in mistakes of the past or in fears of self or in any form of (and I hate the term) pity.
You have a great life compared to so many others. Look at what you DO have and then go from there.
Would your grandmother want you to die? Even if she is in heaven, would she really want you to join her now?
You are young. Go out and find people like you. No matter how unique you think you are, there are people like you who will accept you.

Black, white whatever, suicide is never ever an answer, it's a shitty way out. It's a long term solution to a short term problem, but one that ruins lives of all around you.
Whatever is affecting you now, you can get by it.
Even if it's something that you fear your parents will 'disown' you over.

I know a guy 36 years old and won't come out the closet because he's afraid of his family's reaction. He sometimes expresses thoughts like this, and all I can think of is "I bet your mom would rather a gay son than a dead son".

Not at all saying that is what this is, but just think about life and the opportunities in front of you.
