I figured that the gloves were somehow protective so the base stealers wouldn't get hurt.

Are they really just switching just to switch?

I don't know anything for certain, but I'd have to guess they're just some padded gloves or even just regular batting gloves to wear so their hands aren't torn up sliding. I used to do that in high school and you don't want to use your regular batting gloves because it tears them up.
