There are several ways to defend your patent even if you don't have the cash to pay for it yourself. First, there are contingency fee patent lawyers (essentially, they only get paid if you receive damages). Second, there are several patent monetization companies. The deals they will agree to depend on a lot of factors but most want you to transfer the patent to them in exchange for a percentage of any monies they receive for enforcing the patent. The first option will likely yield more money for you, if the patent in infringed, but the second offers you fewer headaches because the company (rather than you) will be the entity principally involved in the lawsuit
