Seems that If one bank chain would have a few branches open to 8 or 9 they would have tons of business.
Every other business has extended hours for busy people who work during the day

Back in the day, banks would have to close fairly early to balance their books. It took a long time-big banks would work all night and finish shortly before they opened the next morning. Computer processing sped that up, but they still had to close early enough for the couriers make their connection-all those canceled checks from other banks had to be shipped through the Federal Reserve system back to the banks they were drawn on.
Electronic imaging and real time processing have lessened the need for that, but it's still a tradition. More than you probably wanted to know on the subject

That's why they call it," bankers hours" and why ATM's and online banking were invented.

I can count maybe 3 or 4 times I've had to go into a bank during business hours in the last year. All my checks are direct deposit, I have internet banking to transfer money into different accounts, I have atms if I need cash.

I think my local bank hours are 10-2....with a two hour lunch break.
They don't push themselves very much in retail banking. I'm glad we depend on them less and less.

A lot of banks are open past 5. Their branches may close.
Like Doctor's and Dentists offices?
Because the way of the future is people wanting to spend their time in a bank like a bank is a walmart or something. Less and less people are walking into a bank than ever and you want bank branches to open longer? ATMs are 24 hours a day. Applications are developed to allow you to bank online or do most bank txns yourself. And you want branches that need security and staff to stay open late at night long after the Federal Reserve has closed its books?

You must not have been around when the bank closed everyday at 2 and were not opened on Saturday.

Most banks are fully operational on Saturdays for 4 or 5 hours. You can also go to the bank during your lunch hour.
Banks are more accessible now than they've ever been to be honest. A previous poster made a good point regarding the profitability of staying open later as well. If there was a chance to profit from longer hours, then banks would certainly do so.

I understand Lyle.. I head into the plant at 4:00 AM and aint no banks open. Then when I get off at 8:30.. they all closed too. I ain't got no smart phone so I can't deposit my check that way. The plant offers something called direx deposit, but I dont trust that neither. I want my money in hand as fast as I can get it. I love counting that overtime cash. I sure as hell aint throwen it in sum ATM not knowing whats gonna happen and that thing eat it.
