Why do we tend to close strong in recruiting. Quite often it appears that many programs have filled their commitment quota early. We tend to bring it strong in the end. I'm wondering if we do this by design or it just falls like this.

This year it was due to the late additions of O and Steele. I've always thought it was just tenacity by the staff. Also Les doesn't like kids taking visits after committing, so he likely tells them to get it out of their system before choosing. On top of that, ESPN has a lot to do with it as well as the AAA game. Kids vow to commit during these games a year ahead of time.

Chavis probably had a lot to do with that. He didn't recruit until january

The better players tend to commit later?

A lot of times coaches don't want too many early commitments, because they want to make sure they have the numbers if they pull the rabbit out of the hat and land a big recruit at the end. Its a numbers game all the way up until the end. Some years are more certain then others, but sometimes programs will start scrambling to see who is still available on their boards.

No, Bama fills their quota early. THat's the only program that does so on a regular basis.
Typically we sit around 18 and know most others with a degree of certainty.
That's actually really good come January.

So it appears based on the answers that it is strategy. I do believe it is smart because a lot of kids develop late. Not sure but i think we recruited Foster Moreau after his HS season was over.
