If you're close you may want to take it to the LSU vet school.

My neighbor and good friend is a vet surgeon. All he does is surgeries and most of those are back surgeries.

Have a Dachshund that has been on death's door several times. Had no use of rear legs or bowel control for 3 days one time (was almost enough to pull the plug). He is 14 now and keeps on kicking.

Anti-inflammatories are a must. Additionally, there are laser treatments that work really well to reduce inflammation around the disc. The vet can usually find the problematic disc by feel.
