I'm learning to play more fingerstyle stuff so I'm growing the fingernails out on my right (picking) hand. My right index finger is a pain because every time it starts to grow out I chip the nail and have to file it back. I have trouble with the thumb sometimes too. I've heard some people will paint their nails with superglue to strengthen them. I haven't gotten that desperate yet but I could see it happening.

Good luck with that. It's typically a lifelong, high maintenance operation. Players like Tommy Emmanuel and Steve Howe don't do it; they use flesh, though I expect their picking fingers are decently callused. Tommy does use a thumb pick.
