He followed the dog onto the owner's own private property and then shot it. That's not an act of self-defense.

It reads to me like the attack was happening as the dogs moved onto the neighbor's property, and that the shooting was in fact meant to protect his dog from the ongoing attack. If the story is saying that the man followed the attacker dog and shot it AFTER the attack had stopped, then I'm mistaken.

Nevertheless, this doesn't seem to have anything to do with the man being a cop.
