According to Wayne Flint of Auburn University, Capote had an enormous ego. He desperately wanted to win a Pulitzer and a National Book Award and has never won either. Flint says there is no way in hell Capote would have let Lee take the credit for a Pulitzer winning novel. I gotta say that from what I've heard about Capote I agree with him.
