Look up the Kingdom of Meroë and you will notice a number of Egyptian peoples residing further south along the Nile River were indeed more reminiscent of Sub-Saharan Africans than Arabs.

The Kingdom of Kush conquered Egypt for a time. They weren't Egyptians any more than Spaniards became Aztecs when taking over in South America.

I wouldn't expect them to all be the same "color" (in our terms). Given the location of Egypt and some of the ancient Egyptian artwork, they were most likely what we would consider a diverse country today.
