When I moved to Baton Rouge in 1992, the doomsdayers were saying the same thing about Big Education going broke, but salaries and budgets have ballooned much higher than inflation rates. "Nothing left to trim".

Uh, that's a retired distinguished professor at a flagship university. It's not like they just pay all history professors that amount.

A friend of mine works at LSU. He watches movies and posts to Facebook all day - from his office. Every two years, his department schedules a "meeting" with the comparable department at UA in Tuscaloossa for the Friday and Monday of the LSU Bama game, they take an LSU van and gas card, while LSU also pays for their motel rooms and meals for three nights. They never actually stay Sunday night or make the "meeting" on Monday. As long as there is money for this type of thing, I say cut, cut, cut away.

So much fail in this thread.
Oil prices only account for around 1/8th of the budget shortfall. Most of it is due to crony capitalism and poor management at the highest levels.

Well shite. This solves the mystery. All higher ed workers are frick offs. Lets cut the budgets some more.
I thought the budgets needed trimming, but it should have stopped 3 years ago.
I'm pretty pissed that mr. spineless didn't even really attempt to try and rally people to think about a common sense approach and close some schools.
He said a few words and held his finger in the air and decided it was not worth the trouble. Case closed.

people of average intelligence getting degrees with limited economic use, devaluing the degrees for everyone else, is a bad thing
lowering standards to ensure these kids can get in school and then using grade inflation and easy grading to keep them eligible...is terrible

It's also an endowed position meaning that some, if not most of the salary is covered by the endowment and not the taxpayer, at least not until retirement possibly.
