re: Quarterman has to start at PG the rest of the season

Everyone is talking offense and turnovers... TQ's length on defense is far superior to all of our guards, this is why he should play 30+. The turnovers are an issue, a big one right now, but shouldn't be the basis for our playing time splits.
Look at Stringer/Hickey, they were top 2 in the SEC in assist/turnover ratio, but they were ultimately, and unfortunately always a hindrance to our success despite their heart and effort night in and night out.
TQ reminds me so much of Garrett Temple, I can't believe I'm not hearing the comparisons. Ladies and Gentlemen, the 2006 final four team was not to be without Temple's defense.

Defensively sure but TQ is way better on the offensive end. Temple didn't have to score on the final four team.

Quarterman seems to be able to find his own shot better than Gray too. And he can knock them down pretty consistently. He's our best passer, he can handle the ball well, and he hits his shot.
Honestly, I'm not sure Gray does anything better than Tim Q
I know "starting" doesn't really matter versus just playing starters minutes, but still. Gray in the right role off the bench could be a nice punch, and Tim Q is just the better player and needs to be starting.
shite as of right now Tim Q might be the best player we have on the roster with the way he's playing. he needs to start.

His only real strengths over TQ are speed and ability to win 1 on 1 matchups.

You are an idiot! Quartermann is a ball hogging spastic turnover machine. If Grey does not start than JUST obviously hands the keys to Patterson. Even as a freshman he is way more polished than Turnovermann

You ever consider TQ is in the right role coming off the bench? Why mess with that?

This was the basis of my argument. The offense is extra. Its an add-on, if you will. Temple's defense alone made him worthy, even though he was an excellent ball-handler and decision maker as well.

or maybe he'd be even better starting
I dunno, why not try it out next game? Just see what happens.

I think you run the risk of shattering Gray's confidence if you do this whereas what they're doing now is working. TQ continues to get meaningful minutes. I think the risk outweighs the reward. I'm totally onboard with you though that TQ has played unbelievable and needs to play meaningful minutes. I just think he's doing that already. If Gray sits and becomes a basket case, we go from a solid 7 man rotation with minor contribution from our other bigs to a 6 man rotation.

This could happen but I doubt JJ gives into the temptation just yet. TQ is already being hailed as the 6th man of the year in the SEC by the media and rightly so. Besides, he's already playing starters minutes. Now if you want JP to get more of Gray's minutes until Gray settles down I'm all for that. Gray is capable as he proved against good competition in UMASS, WVU, OM and UGA. He seems to be torn at times between distributing and trying to make a play by himself. LSU is more than capable of breaking a good press, as they proved over and over against UF last night in the second half.

Has anyone here that has played sports on any level had their confidence shattered by being benched when they messed up? I'm guessing no. If you have, you're a mental midget and don't have what it takes to lead a team anyway. I played point guard in high school. If I had a poor start to a game and threw the ball all over the court, I was taken out of the game. I was ready to play whenever coach put me back in.

Yes, I doubt Gray will lose confidence if benched. And yes, if he does, he's not cut out for LSU hoops. I do think though that TQ's physical skills have taken his spot in the rotation. Doesn't mean Gray can't fire back and earn his 30 minutes elsewhere.

I'm along these lines, if he's a good smart player he can recognize he hasnt performed the way he needs to to continue earning 30+ minutes a game. Now one can argue that's because he's asked to be a distributing PG when he really isn't, but I think bringing him off the bench at the off guard spot would not only be best for him but best for the team and everyone wins.

Speed? Did you see Q bring the ball up the floor, beat the double team, and either score or pass to Martin who slammed it. He was past the double team so fast that Florida's players could not adjust. Its amazing how much court speed he has. Since he is tall, we expect him to be uncordinated. Its not the case. Not only that but he sees the floor while moving top speed and hits the open man.
When has G won a one on one match up and finished.

Give Grey some minutes off the bench I guess. Make him handle the ball a lot less
Agree completely. Apparently LSU is ranked 321st in the country in turnovers per game.... IMO Grey is a big part of the problem, but the entire team seems to be careless with the ball.
I think taking the ball out of grey's hands a little bit more will help, but the entire team also needs to work on how they take care of the ball.
If we stop the stupid turnovers and limit the TOs to about 9 or 10 a game instead of 14 or 15 we could be in for a good run in the SEC and into March.

9 or 10 is unrealistic
I think 12-13 is realistic
Keep in mind we play up tempo for more possessions, teams who have around 10 TO a game play very slow.

Not really. This team is extremely inconsistent right now. A lot of it seems to center around Josh Gray.

Personally, I'm against changing the starters.
1. It lends credibility to the players that whether they start or not is important. This hurts the 6-8th players' psyche
2. What's it matter, it's who finishes and who gets the most minutes that counts
Posted on 1/21/15 at 5:33 pm to HSHoopscoach
Coaches over think this stuff. Players aren't as fragile as you make them out to be. Play your best players the majority of the time. It's that simple. On that note, sitting your best player for an entire half because he picked up two fouls in the first few minutes is also asinine.
Look, I don't care if Quarterman starts or not. What I care about is increased minutes for Patterson and less minutes for Gray.
