I haven't lived a thrilling life, I guess. You might call it "ordinary." I have a basic understanding from civics on how bonds work, but I have never been arrested, nor do I know anyone that has called me for bail money.

Here in the Jackson area, there is a lot of talk about low bonds in Hinds County. An auto burglar gets a $10,000 bond in Hinds County, but they get a $1 million bond in Madison County. The wealthy older lady that was murdered a couple weeks back - two of the three suspects were out on ridiculously low bonds.

In reading this story about the suburban DA having enough: LINK, I noticed this comment:

quote:

It doesn't matter high the bond it set. As long as you have personal surety bail agents they will post a bond for a $50 processing fee and a $25 jail tax. They will put the rest on a no interest payment plan. Until the legislature does away with personal surety bail agents and extending credit on bonds. These thugs will continue to get out with no real money.

Is this saying that the thugs/family of the thugs aren't even having to shell out the 10% of bond set - they are paying 75 bucks to get out of jail and signing a promissory note in which they won't pay?

RORs and PSBUs are, in fact, worthless promissory notes.

If they don't pay, then in most states a bounty hunter can legally track them down. I suspect (but am not certain) they can then perform a citizen's arrest to get him back into court.

That 10% thing isn't accurate. No bail bonds is getting people out with just $75. Some do payments, but they are not accepting just what is due to the jail. They have to get at the least what the jail gets and what their insurer gets. In some states, the bond company can't get you put back in jail for not paying. They have to wait for you to skip court. It is a business that the jails and insurance companies make the most money with the least risk.
