It's 2015, no one cares about average anymore.

Altuve won a batting title and Fowler got on base at the same clip as him.

Valbuena was solid butCubs needed a veteran OF. After all Valbuena was a waiver pickup by Cubs.

Fowler is not near the player Altuve is. I really liked Fowler, don't get me wrong. I just find it humorous that the Astros got trade raped in this deal.

Bingo. Cubs have been after a veteran outfielder since the winter meetings, they needed some speed, they needed higher OBP and they wanted a true leadoff man. They got all of those in one player.

Obviously a move the Cubs felt strongly about since they gave up Straily (a major league ready starting pitcher) and 2 years of Luis Valbuena for 1 year of Fowler.

And improved pretty significantly in his time in Chicago and became a very under appreciated player that produces a quality at bat almost every PA and sees a ton of pitches.

Yeah, but in 200+ less at bats than Altuve. No one is arguing that Fowler doesn't get on base at an elite level. He just isn't on the field enough. For his career so far, he has been equivalent to a part time player by rarely getting more than 450 ABs in a season.
