That's probably a good idea but you still should have let the president know it wasn't you that made the changes, unless the guy that made the changes reports to you.

It's amazing the amount of people willing to risk their lives to climb Mt. Everest.

I wasn't thinking about it because it wasn't in response to a work issue. It was a drunk issue

I think I am going to suggest to my VP that I simply take this over. The 15% or so that he does isn't that much more on my plate.

Exactly this.

Of course, the VP will then expect you to review the work of anyone else, but that is how you climb up the corporate ladder.

The president already expected this to start with, so you might as well formalize it.

This.

Good grief.

Address it, deal with it, move on.

The dude who nonchalantly flits in, grins ablaze, leaving a wake of destruction and extra work for you is the problem here. He has no skin in the game and does not care if the program/project is fubar.

Get your Ka-bar and hamstring him, providing him with some time off for introspection and growth. When he returns he will display a new attitude and ethic, while lacking the flippant attitude displayed in sabotaging your livelihood.

Don't be passive about this. If you think the VP will cover for you because he knows you didn't do it, you're leaving yourself vulnerable. People cover their own arse at work, not the asses of other people. Tell the president how it happened and tell the VP you want to handle the report alone from now on.

Never trust other motherfrickers at work. They couldn't care less if your family starves as long as it will get them one more pat on the back.

Dont throw your co-worker under the bus. Wait for a good opportunity to casually tell the President and Vice President off the record/face to face. Dont put it in writing.

But should I point this out? I'm thinking maybe in casual conversation if it comes up, but then again, the president thinks I screwed this thing up twice in a week.

Do you report to the VP? I would send an email that it appears the issue was caused by one of the updates you weren't involved in but you've gone ahead and fixed it. I'd all propose taking control of the update process entirely. Your other colleagues could still make updates, but you could review them before posting.
