As stated, I'm a photographer. I go through a lot of storage. In the past 4 months alone, I've eaten up almost a terabyte on just RAW images. I'm looking for a more advanced solution for backing up and storage.

My current thought process is to go with a NAS system, but I feel that it may not be as flexible as I want. I do want to use it as a media center as well.........but I'm worried that I'll hit the max capacity quicker than I would like.

Then, I thought about building a server for additional flexibility and RAID the drives. It seems that I would be able to expand more easily at a lower cost (although the upfront cost would be higher).

What direction should I go? Or something totally different?

Simple solution- drobo. I love mine and I've had it since '09. I've slowly upgraded storage to 16tb. When I had a drive fail, I ejected it and put a new one in on the fly. It's simple.

QNAP makes some nice stuff to, but if I were going to buy something for myself, it would be Drobo because of the ease of use.
