No, I fully realize the impact both bad-- and great-- defense can have.

One, though, frankly matters more than the other. In the college game, I'd much rather have the defender-- but in the pro game, the offensive player is the answer.

disagree here. A player that is sieve defensively will be exploited by great teams to the extent that he hurts his team. Secondly, open shots are great for the other four players, but that is what the defense wants (i.e. "make someone else beat you")

Some sort of two way play is needed. The better defenders can find roles in the offense (Roll Man, Corner guy, Rim Runner,etc.) much easier than masking a bad defensive player every possession.
