I still think Shoop is the better of these guys. He had less talent to work with.

Hell, yeah. Doing what he did in the middle of scholarship sanctions?
I'm impressed. Franklin won't let go of him easily.

Shoop held Michigan State to 10 and Ohio State to 17 (in regulation). Allowed 20 points twice incl. bowl game.
Venables gave up 45 to Georgia, 28 to Georgia Tech, and played FSU without Winston. Allowed 20 points 3 times.
They're both great coordinators, but give me Shoop.

Nice. That makes things pretty clear considering the state of the programs involved.

Despite the extension, Venables has drawn interest, the person said, from LSU after the departure of defensive coordinator John Chavis to Texas A&M.

These stats don't mean anything without accounting for the talent on their defense and a myriad of other things. Every one of these guys are qualified.

here are the Clemson starters on defense, according to this depth chart updated last week, with their class and overall composite prospect rankings from 24/7
DE - Corey Crawford (SR) 4 star, number 201
DT - Grady Jarrett (SR) 3 star, number 1131
DT - Josh Watson (SR) 4 star, number 5 (prep school)
DE - Vic Beasley (SR) 3 star, number 483 (converted TE prospect)
SLB - Korrin Wiggins (SO) 3 star, number 660 (converted S prospect)
MLB - Kellen Jones (JR) 4 star, number 290
WLB - Tony Steward (SR) 5 star, number 15
CB - MacKensie Alexander (RS FR) 5 star, number 29
S - Jayron Kearse (SO) 4 star, number 216
S - Robert Smith (SR) 3 star, number 1196 (converted DT QB)
CB - Garry Peters (RS SR) 3 star, number 324
7 seniors, including a 5th year, no true freshman, 2 five stars and 4 four stars.
now heres the same for Penn State (from this)
DE - C.J. Olaniyan (SR) 4 star, number 167
NT - Austin Johnson (RS SO) 3 star, number 981
DT - Anthony Zettel (RS JR) 4 star, number 134 (converted OL prospect)
DE - Deion Barnes (RS JR) 3 star, number 313
OLB - Brandon Bell (SO) 3 star, number 708
MLB - Mike Hull (SR) 4 star, number 183
WLB - Nyeem Wartman (RS SO) 3 star, number 649
CB - Jordan Lucas (JR) 3 star, number 1253
FS - Marcus Allen (FR) 3 star, number 337
SS - Adrian Amos (SR) 3 star, number 952
CB - Trevor Williams (JR) 3 star, number 1202 (converted WR prospect)
3 seniors, a freshman, no five stars, 3 four stars.
yet the overall stats for Shoop and Venables vs Power 5 teams are essentially interchangeable

When it comes to Venables you have to look at more than this year. Typically he is just an average coach. He benefited from have a mainly upperclassmen defense
